Are you recognizing that taxes are high, good jobs are scarce and marriages and families are continuing to dissolve?  Are loss and grief your dominate feelings and even your faith feels lethargic? When you think about Christmas this year do you just feel empty and truth be told, you wonder why you should even bother?  If that is your story, or the story of someone you know and love, then you know your biggest question is where’s the hope?

Just a reminder that the Grenada Missions team is selling apple pies. Only $8.00 per pie or 5 pies for $35.00! After the last pie fundraiser we were told by many that they were the best apple pies they’d ever tasted. The crust is being prepared by a professional, award-winning pastry chef. The pies can be baked immediately or frozen for later use. Pies come with thawing and baking instructions.

Money can be brought to the church on Sunday, November 21st, or to the church office throughout the following week or paid at time of pick up.

Pies are to be picked up at SBC on November 26^th, between 10:30 am and 5:00 pm.

I would hear an incredible communicator somewhere and I would walk away determined that I was going to change. I would be more patient with my children; I would grow in some spiritual discipline; I would be more loving as a husband; I would become a better pastor or teacher. I was inspired by what I had heard and therefore I was going to try harder and I was going to change. I would really morph this time because this time I was going to really try. This time everything would be different and my life would be really transformed.

But it never worked. For a few hours or a few days at best I would try hard to change and than once again I would be battling my impatience; expressing my irritability to those closest to me; or realizing again that I had just gone through an entire day without really praying. I was trying to change: I was motivated, inspired; clear about what I wanted to do…I wanted to be transformed….but I failed every single time. I ended up frustrated, defeated, and completely untransformed. Why? Because I was trying to change and not training to change.

Our culture loves secrets. Stop and think about how many books have been written and movies made over the last few years that deal with the supposed secrets of the Vatican or the Free Masons. Do a quick TV listings scan and you will discover secrets of alien invasions in ancient archeology, secret codes that lead people to hidden American civil war gold, or secrets of the rich and famous that are now being revealed to everyone. Clearly we are fascinated by secrets.

Maybe that is why so many people believe the Bible also has secrets buried in its pages. Well meaning people have passed on secret bread recipes, secret formulas for anointing oil that will cure arthritis, secret locations of oil in Israel and my favourite to date: the secret code that revealed the King James Version is the only one sanctioned by God.

We seem to love secrets.

There is just one little problem: God doesn’t do very many secrets.
