Missions Highlight: Heather Bancroft
By Heather Bancroft
A highlight on missions: You are likely aware of SBC's ongoing partnerships such as Mercy Tech Mission, Father's Heart Projects and the Canadian Baptist Ministry. We thought you would enjoy reading about some of the individuals whom SBC has supported as they stepped out in faith to serve the Lord and serve others and we hope to highlight some of these over the next few weeks.
My name is Heather Bancroft and I grew up going to Summerland Baptist Church. When I graduated high school I went on to become a registered nurse and had the opportunity to travel to Papua New Guinea this Spring with the support of SBC.
YWAM Medical Ships is an organization based out of Australia and has been partnering with the Papua New Guinea government to provide basic health to the most rural parts of coastal Papua New Guinea. I was able to join this team for three weeks in central Papua New Guinea with a team of 100 other international and local health care professionals. We were based on a converted cruise ship which traveled along the coast of Papua New Guinea offering day clinics in villages on land. We offered immunizations for children, medicine and emergency dental care, health education and contraception options. We saw over 3,000 patients in 21 villages during the time that I was there.
The villages that we visited were all accessible only by water and many had not had a visit from a health worker for years. Many people had never seen a doctor before and none had been to dentist. With my maternity experience working in Canada I acted as the teams midwife and offered antenatal care to pregnant women in the communities that we visited. We offered clean birth kits, prenatal vitamins, and blood testing for each woman.
It was a great privilege to be able to join this team and meet the incredible people who live in these remote villages. I’m grateful to SBC for helping support me to join in YWAM Medical Ships incredible work.
