Home Sharing

  • By Heather Readman
Wednesday, 21 March 2018

Home Sharing is a concept that not everyone is familiar with, and yet it has the great ability to impact everyone involved and serves the community as well. We asked Heather to share her family's experience with us...

We are a Home Schooling family, consisting of 5 humans, two dogs and three cats. Life is busy for sure, but it's a good life.

A couple of years ago we did a home study with the intention of a Home Share...

A Different Kind of Gold

  • By Rick Cogbill

During the recent winter Olympics in South Korea, the world’s attention was on the athletes who have trained so hard for a chance to show their skills to the world, and potentially qualify for a medal – preferably gold...

You may wonder what we’ve been up to these last months. Here’s a little insight into our journey so far.

Location, location, location
Our townhouse is a 3 bedroom corner unit, in a complex of 30 units. We are located in northeastern Surrey, an area called Clayton Heights about 2 blocks from the Langley-Surrey border. There are lots of townhouses along with single family homes in the neighbourhood.

Our Shine Christmas Party

  • By Carolyn Wiebe
Tuesday, 09 January 2018

Excited girls in cozy pajamas.

The smell of cookies baking.

A cozy fireplace crackling (on a tv screen) and Christmas music playing in the background.

This was the setting for our Shine girls' Christmas party. Our smiling volunteers, dressed in an array of Christmas sweaters, flannel pjs, and festive (aka gaudy) flashing Christmas jewelry welcomed the girls in from the cold. And best of all, the Christmas tree was practically drowning in presents...

Christmas Memories

Monday, 18 December 2017

Many of us have treasured Christmas memories and traditions from when we were young. It's part of the warmth and excitement we feel in the build up to Christmas. We asked our Seniors to share a favorite Christmas memory or tradition... here are a few that we received...

Little Ones With Very Big Hearts

  • By Wendy Nixon
Wednesday, 29 November 2017

On November 8 the playschool classes filled boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

These little ones have very big hearts.

We planned on filling 2 boxes, but that quickly turned into 4 boxes!!!

The playschool kids really got into it with one little one offering some pieces of Kleenex from his pocket...

Christmas Advent #lovesummerland

  • By Carolyn Wiebe
Thursday, 23 November 2017

SBC loves Summerland and we want them to know it. Afterall, love is an action, not just a warm fuzzy feeling.

This Christmas season we want to encourage everyone to join in on the same advent calendar. A community advent calendar.

If your family is a normal family, pulling off an advent activity daily for TWENTY FIVE consecutive days is not only impossible but also sort of tortuous. Advent calendars have so many good ideas but that's kind of the problem....SO MANY ideas. Who can follow through? Not this lady. And not her minions...

Tiny House, Mighty Angels!

First a discontent, then a seed thought precipitating anticipated action, followed by hesitant wonder at the enormity of it all. What!! Leave our lovely, comfortable, fair-sized home in Okanagan Falls for who-knows-just-what in Summerland? Well… we do commute at least twice weekly for activities at SBC – it would be nice to not have the commute. We could participate more… but we wouldn’t have an excuse for saying “No, ya know, the travelling distance.” Okay, we’ll do it. God will open the way...

On Wednesday, February 21, SBC provided an information night for those interested in being part of a small group. This is a summary of the information and experience we shared together...

Jingle Jam - The Big Give

  • By Sonia Biro
Monday, 29 January 2018

On Dec 1, 2017 SBC kicked off the Christmas season by hosting our very first Jingle Jam, the BIG Give……and it was FANTASTIC!

What better way to encourage and inspire our friends, families and community to go BIG with the idea of generosity and to celebrate God’s greatest gift, than with coming together to experience a community wide Christmas party with live music, dancing, super fun games, great food and really, really funny people...

Seasons of Practical Skills

  • By Pastor Del Riemer
Tuesday, 16 January 2018

This past week, SBC began our fourth year of Practical Skills Workshops offered to our Summerland Community. Each year we offer 3 seasonal catalogues that contain up to 14 different workshops taught by gifted (and mostly retired) instructors from our church family. Some people ask, “What is the motivation for offering these courses?” To get more people to church? Evangelism? Fundraising? The answer is... none of these! We simply desire to enrich our church members by acknowledging their life skills and encouraging them to enrich someone elses’ life by transferring these passions and skills to others. In addition, we want to love and connect with those in our Summerland community with no strings attached...

Family Rhythm Check Up

  • By Bree Young
Wednesday, 03 January 2018

January has arrived. All my attempts to railroad it did not stop it from arriving. Christmas break is coming to an end. No more sleeping in, no more food grazing all day, no more jammies all day, no more Netflix marathons. It is time to eat vegetables again, time to know what day it actually is, time to get feeding, cleaning, transporting kids again.

One Man's Journey

  • By Pastor Del Riemer
Tuesday, 05 December 2017

Most of you at SBC will remember Dean Martens. Dean is a larger than life figure with a loooong beard, bald head and booming voice who has attended for the past 5 years. Dean has lived life on a bumpy road in terms of marriage, finances and career, but his faith in Jesus has sustained him and kept him in pursuit of truth and purpose...

Serving Up Meals With Love

Monday, 27 November 2017

Every day…. It’s relentless; it’s important; it’s laborious; it’s fulfilling for some but tedious for others; it’s life giving; it’s lifelong; it’s expensive; it’s for everyone, of all generations, of all cultures… Every day… Hundreds of days… Thousands of days… Sigh! Any ideas on what “it” is?
