This past October, 152 grandparents registered and attended the first conference of its’ kind in BC (to my knowledge). This event was designed to assist grandparents (and adults who are connected or caring for young people) in investing a godly legacy in the next generation. A team of 10 passionate grandparents from 5 South Okanagan communities met, planned and prepared for 10 months to hold this conference at SBC. Participants came from 24 different churches, over several denominations, and some even came from Alberta, the Lower Mainland, and other parts of BC.
Our speakers were authors Cavin Harper & Josh Mulvihill and Pastor Del Riemer. They covered issues such as: the Biblical role of grandparents, providing ‘memorial stones’ of remembrance to grandkids, the power of spoken blessing, navigating technology, parent/grandparent relationships, priorities of grandparenting, how to teach the core truths of the Bible to grandkids and a challenge to understand the times and navigate the current of our culture.
Many attendees commented on the amazing service offered by a group of our own SBC teen girls and their moms who prepared and served refreshments and food as good as you’d find in a 5-star hotel. Unique resources were provided for all participants such as: a legacy journal, a book authored by one of our speakers, a sapling fir tree to be planted with their grandchildren, among other items. There were even some sponsored prizes given out to grandparents to share with their grandkids such as tickets to the Penticton Vees, Kelowna Rockets and West Kelowna Warriors, a 1 hour Scenic Flight/Tour of the Okanagan and passes to the Grist Mill and the Osoyoos Miniature Train Museum.
Music was provided by a band made up of musicians from 5 different churches and there were even several appearances by ‘Waldorf and Stadtler’ of Muppets fame.
Sponsors who came on board to support grandparents as well as the event were: McDonalds, Gorman Bros Lumber, McConnell’s Fruit & Vegetable Market, Save On Foods, Happy Valley Harvest, REMAX, Summerland Motel and Rosedale Motel.
With such great participation and support, where do we go from here? Well, the leadership team is already working on a ‘Grand Camp’ for grandparents and grandkids planned for next September and another conference (for grandparents and parents) in 2020.
Our culture says just to ‘spoil’ and plan fun activities with your grandkids, but Scripture tells us that our role as grandparents is far more strategic and reminds us to know the heart and commands of God and to “make them known to your sons and your grandsons.” Deuteronomy 4:9
