Family Camp 2017
By Colleen Mah
3:00 pm Friday: Yay!! It's here, family camp weekend; my girls and I look forward to this all year. A chance to just get away and spend time with our church family. So, we rush home after work and school to get ready to go. I am feeling so disorganized this week; I work at Summerland Secondary school so it was back to work for me as well as back to school for Kailee and Mackenzie and it's been hard to get back into the routine!
4:45 pm: We're finally packed and ready to go meet dad in West Kelowna for dinner. It starts raining and we're so happy, the entire restaurant is cheering, it's been a long 70+ days without rain! I know rain or shine it won't put a damper on our weekend. We have a nice dinner and say goodbye to Ed since he won't be joining us this weekend.
6:45 pm: We get to camp and find our room in the lodge, yay, we'll have our own bathroom! It's then that I check out the bunk beds and realize we forgot the bedding, well at least we have our pillows! So off for an emergency Wal-Mart trip to get sleeping bags, we only need 2 and they have 4 left, lucky us! I get back with just enough time to unpack and make the beds before our first faith story.
The faith stories have to be my favorite part of the weekend. I love the unity that comes with knowing that we're all broken, we all have our fears and struggles, and all our lives are messy. With God and his amazing grace and mercy we are forgiven, and loved and cared for through all of it, it doesn't matter what we've done or what's happened to us. It takes vulnerability to share our stories and struggles, but I believe that's how we create connections, and become a church family. It's something that doesn't come easily to me, but I'm working on it.
One of my favorite verses is Isaiah 41:10 "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am the lord your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand". Thank You so much to Pam Borchert, Dave and Lois Goertzen, Sonia Biro, and Andy Wouda for sharing your stories.
Saturday: There are so many memories made this weekend, the talent show, water regatta, tubing, face painting, and the boat ride we love it all! The food and company is always so good. What happens when the youth get to go play and connect after campfire, the games, laughter and good times with friends, our church family.
It's Sunday morning already, time to clean up and head home. One last thing, time for the draw for next year's winners of Family camp, and it's us!! We can't wait to come back again next year
I am so thankful for a church family that not only shares the struggles they encounter on their journey, but loves me and prays for me on mine and I hold on to the verse in Jeremiah 29:11; "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future".
Thanks to everyone who submitted photos through the 'Family Camp Through Your Eyes' contest. Congratulations to the Tiessens who won the Dairy Queen gift card!
