IV for the Soul
By Tianna Riemer
Music is powerful. I don’t think anyone would argue with that. It has the ability to alter our mood. It can bring us together. It can bring a long forgotten memory to the surface in an instant. Without it movies just wouldn’t be the same.
A wise friend once told me that music is like an IV drip for his soul. He said he has to be careful what he allows to drip in because over time it can really impact him. Isn’t that true for all of us?
This conversation came at just the right time for me. My kids were starting to really pay attention to the lyrics of music and I had begun volunteering with youth here at SBC. It had been years since I had put much effort into finding new music. But I now had this fresh motivation to find music that my kids and our youth would not only enjoy but that would also encourage and lift them up. I wanted to connect them to a drip that would breathe life and truth into their souls. Oh and also mine.
The hard part is connecting them to that music. You can go to concerts, tell them about bands and songs, play music when you’re around them but it usually takes time alone with a song to really let it sink in. That’s why Spotify is so fantastic!
As you may be already aware, SBC has recently created an account with Spotify (a digital music streaming service that gives you access to millions of songs and other content from artists all over the world.) We have created a number of playlists (it’s like making digital mix tapes!). Some playlists connect you to songs used in many of our ministries and activities here at SBC and some are just thematic collections we thought you might enjoy.
Now you may be asking how do I access all this great music!?
First of all, you will need a Spotify account to access our playlists. You can sign up for a free account (you will hear occasional ads between tracks and can only skip over a limited number of songs) or a Premium account (no ads, unlimited ‘skips’, ability to download playlists to listen offline and more). The Premium account costs $9.99 per month (a 30 day free trial is available).
Since launching our Spotify SBC Music Hub, we have noticed that finding us varies greatly depending on the device being used and the kind of account you have. We would like to recommend the following two options for finding us as they will take you directly to the ‘SBCmusicHub’ without having to search for us.
SBC Website: Go to summerlandbaptist.ca, hover over the Resource tab and click Spotify: SBC Music Hub. You will then need to log in to Spotify (or sign up for an account if you don’t have one).
SBC App: Open the app and tap Resources, then tap Spotify: SBC Music Hub, then tap Spotify. You will then need to log in to Spotify (or sign up for an account if you don’t have one). If you have not downloaded our SBC App and would like to, click here.
If you have any difficulty, just stop by The Hub on Sunday mornings and we will do our best to help you get sorted out!
