Have you ever felt alone? Have you ever been lonely and wondered if anyone cared? Have you left a group of friends, work place, family unit or church and assumed that you were forgotten as you watched life move on without you? Well if you haven’t… be patient, because this is our human condition. We all want and need to be valued, loved, embraced and acknowledged.
We have many in our church family who are no longer able to attend services or events due to failing health, difficulty in travelling even short distances, inconvenience or just plain age. Many of these people have invested in our church family in practical ways over the years; perhaps even having helped build our building, looked after children, taught Bible studies, provided music or fulfilled leadership roles.
On April 19th, our Beacon Initiative (Senior) Steering team planned an event to acknowledge and love on several of these folks who are unable to attend or find it too difficult to fellowship with us in our building anymore. We contacted them, went to their place of residence, assisted them into our vehicles and brought them to Zia’s Stonehouse Restaurant for lunch and a time of celebration and connection.
When they arrived, they were met by over 40 of our church seniors who came to share love and appreciation for the many years these folks have invested in our church family. Shannon at Zias even let us use the piano to sing some old familiar choruses which permeated the entire restaurant with ‘old’ but passionate voices singing the ‘story of their lives’… Jesus! We stood and announced some of the many achievements and involvement of those we had invited to honor, and then presented them each with a personal card of love and thanks, as well as a small gift (a solar figurine which moves in the sun).
We all need to be reminded of God’s love for us and to make sure to pass that love on to those who can easily forget that they are part of God’s family… and ours too! You are NOT forgotten!
“I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. You are precious in my sight, since you are honored and I love you. The people whom I formed for Myself, will declare My praise.” Isaiah 43:1-4 & 21 (selected)
