Playing it Forward

By Connie Denesiuk

While there are there are certainly issues that can divide folks in the small town of Summerland, I am grateful that there are remarkable things happening that weave our community together.

Play it Forward, a benefit concert recently held at Centre Stage Theatre, was a perfect example of our neighbours and community coming together. The caliber of music performed at the concert by local artists was amazing, and if smiling faces are any indication, people really enjoyed themselves!

The evening got off to a rocking start with fabulous music from the cutting edge folk/rock group Groundswell. Anna McGuigan, an incredibly talented flautist, next delighted the audience with her music. Guitarist Kirk Dixon had the audience clapping along and bouncing in their seats to fabulous music that he wrote and performed. Jo and the Soul, a Jazz/funk combo consisting of extremely talented high school students, awed the audience with their youthful, fresh talent.

The musical finale included all the musicians on stage, featured dueling guitars, drum solo antics, and an entertaining mix of fun and talent.

What I found particularly heartwarming was the community support. If there wasn't a full house, it had to be close. Summerland Credit Union and Summerland Timber Mart sponsored the event, Summerland Council donated the use of the Centre Stage facility, the musicians donated their time, and many businesses and artists donated items for the silent auction.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, $5,000.00 was raised, and divided between two causes. Half of the funds raised will help to send 27 SBC youth to San Quintin, Baja from March 23 - 30 this year, to build a home for a needy family.
The other half will go to Mercy Tech Mission, as it continues to work at 'Changing Lives, one skill at a time' by teaching employable skills in rural Mozambique.

Play it Forward was a fast-paced, upbeat and very enjoyable community event. I'm left with only one question: When can we do it again?
