Update for December 3, 2021
Hello everyone. Well, once again, the Province of BC has issued updated PHO’s for gatherings and events in advance of the anticipated holiday festivities. Unfortunately, the previous exemptions in place for ‘house of worship’ attendees have also been rescinded.
The biggest changes that will impact us at SBC on a weekly basis for now are the following:
1) We must now wear masks indoors and during the service (indoor gathering) with a few exceptions for music leaders and speakers and ‘ceremonial meals’. Effective December 5, all services for the time being, will be under a 100% face covering rule. This will also impact Youth and Bible study activities and other gatherings at the church.
2) We are limited to 50% seating capacity for indoor events, OR we can be checking for vaccination and go to 100% capacity. The best historical information we have lists our maximum sanctuary seating at 300-350, so for now we will limit seating to 175 Adults. This will likely be reduced as we find out our ‘0fficial’ number in the weeks ahead. Children will be proceeding to their classes after checking in at the lobby then proceeding downstairs (instead of being dismissed during the service) to allow for more adult seating capacity.
This past year has placed Lee and I and SBC staff in the cross hairs between polarizing groups with varying degrees of maturity in handling their points of view. We continue to navigate troubling times understanding that our biblical mandate is to be subject to those in authority over us. (Romans 13 provides starkly unpopular directives around this from the Apostle Paul).
The overarching question in our minds right now is “what would it look like to a divided world for us to be in communion while we disagree”? With that in mind we will continue with the 50% capacity and likely work towards a second service in January, more to follow in the days ahead.
These are polarizing times and we would kindly appreciate that you work with and not against the Ushers, Staff, or other congregants on Sunday morning whatever your opinion on what we should/should not be doing. I reiterate that we will support and follow the rule of law (but not exceed) with government mandates and only reconsider that position if the Church is being singled out unfairly with restrictions. In fact this is a rescinding of some exceptions that no other groups have been allowed (not just in BC but among the western provinces).
We may not all agree, but we can still be in unity, as frustrating as this is in what feels like “a step backwards” for some and a leap to “where we should be” for others. Regardless, the cost is relatively small price to pay for continued reasonable freedoms in worship.
